I know everyone says it – but where does the time go? It’s March tomorrow (as I write). We are only about four or five weeks away from harvest!
The weather has at last settled and is giving us the perfect run into what will be a wonderful quality vintage. Yields have been carefully managed as usual and are actually a little down on the last couple of years. Disease pressure has been zero as even with the rain earlier in the season, the strong gusty winds that blow though the Awatere Valley have keep moisture in the vine canopy to an absolute minimum.
Our winery team has blossomed into an international array of young people with a passion for wine and a thirst for experience. We receive about three requests a week all year round, from people wishing to come and work at the winery or in the vineyards and this increases to about three or four a day at this time of year! The lucky few who join the team can expect plenty of hard work, but will be rewarded with a great team spirit, the chance to learn and plenty of good food.
We have just bottled the 2016 Tekau and it is stunning. Rich and weighty with gentle citrus and passionfruit alongside toasty oak – we used a barrel of new oak in the blend again this year and it adds a lovely complexity. We made a total of 11 barrels.
The 2016 Blind River Sauvignon Blanc was selected by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine in their Top 12 Sauvignon Blancs, for their January 2017 issue.
And Jane McQuitty of The Times wrote the following as part of her feature on New Zealand Pinot Noir: “If you can, trade up to the bold, game and truffle oomph of the top Marlborough drop, 2014 Blind River Pinot Noir”.
